Optimization of Adaptive Systems

[Group] [Publications] [Grant support] [Software] [Former members]

The adaptive systems (former SONN) workgroup is concerned with the design and analysis of biologically-inspired, adaptive information processing systems. In particular, we aim at a deeper understanding of the interaction of self-organization, learning, and evolution in the design of adaptive systems and the role of structure in neural information processing. Right now, we are studying
  • model selection for kernel-based methods,
  • efficient training of support vector machines for large-scale problems,
  • multi-criteria machine learning,
  • policy gradient methods and direct policy search in reinforcement learning,
  • dynamical models of cortical information processing.
We offer theoretical and practical advice in computational intelligence to other research groups and industrial partners. A supported software package is available. Real-world applications include the optimization of
  • biometric and medical image processing,
  • models in computational neuroscience,
  • robot controllers,
  • chemical processes and plants,
  • driver assistance systems,
  • time series predictors for physical processes, and
  • classifiers for sequence analysis in bioinformatics.

Software

Shark - a modular C++ library for the design and optimization of adaptive systems. It mainly provides methods for nonlinear optimization, in particular single- and multi-objective evolutionary algorithms and unconstraint gradient-based algorithms (EALib), as well as machine learning methods including various types of neural networks and kernel-based algorithms (ReClaM). Basic tools for random number generation, I/O, Arrays, etc. are included. The Shark library works under SunOS/Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.

Shark can be downloaded from The official Shark-Project Site at the SourceForge open source development and download repository.

See also Christian′s software page for additional software.
